POCKET PARK TO HOST PERFORMANCES, THANKS TO FOX’S “THE BIG LEAP”
Opening September 27, corner park will feature screening wall, circular stage, sustainable beautification and artwork by acclaimed muralist Alex Yanes.
Detroit, MI – NW Goldberg Cares will unveil a new pocket park this month to celebrate performance and artistic expression in the NW Goldberg neighborhood. Funding for the park was made possible by FOX’s upcoming new series, “The Big Leap,” which is set in Detroit.
The transformation of a 4,000 sq ft. lot on the corner of McGraw and Linwood will be home to the SPOTLIGHT PARK and will be open to the public beginning Monday, Sept. 27, coinciding with the previous week’s evening series premiere of “The Big Leap,” Monday, Sept. 20 at 9:00 PM ET on FOX (Ch. 2, WJBK).
“We are excited to bring such a transformational project to life with support from FOX,” said NW Goldberg Cares Executive Director and Founder Daniel A. Washington.
The park will feature a world-class design complete with a circular stage, intentionally designed perennial flower beds, a fence designed and fabricated by neighborhood artist Eric Froh, murals by acclaimed artist Alex Yanes, and much more.
“Having a space in the neighborhood that can accommodate and support performance is a step toward reviving a resilient and sustainable connection to the arts in the community,” said songwriter and neighborhood resident Audra Kubat. “As an artist and educator, this gives me an opportunity to work directly with my immediate neighbors and develop new and lasting relationships through expression and performance.”
FOX’s uplifting drama “The Big Leap” is set in Detroit and revolves around a group of diverse, down-on-their-luck characters attempting to change their lives by participating in a potentially life-ruining reality dance show featuring a modern reimagining of “Swan Lake.” “The Big Leap” is an innovative show-within-a-show that takes viewers on a journey of self-acceptance, body-positivity and empowerment at any age.
In creating public space for performance, screenings, and inspiring beauty, FOX hopes to inspire artists of all concentrations to leap towards their dreams and share their art with their community.
The SPOTLIGHT PARK will be the grassroots community development corporation’s fourth pocket park since 2019.
