Detroit, MI – Following four-months of construction amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, NW Goldberg Cares is finally opening its REST & RIDE PARK.

The REST & RIDE PARK successfully fundraised over $25,000 via Patronicity in partnership with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Public Spaces Community Places program in December 2019.

The City of Detroit, led by Council President Pro Tempore Mary Sheffield, and the Detroit Department of Transportation supported the project by underwriting the purchase of the covered bus shelter.

“President Pro Tem Mary Sheffield and her staff were instrumental in helping us secure funding for the bus shelter,” said NW Goldberg Cares Executive Director Randal Jean-Baptiste. “Their involvement along with the DDOT is a shining example of the positive things that can happen through public private partnerships.”

The project had support from many local businesses, including:
American Modern Landscape, Brasco International, Christensen’s Plant & Hardscape Center, D’Angelo Construction Corp, Detroit Dough, Henry Ford Health System, Good Cakes and Bakes, One Soul Graphics, Rebel Nell, and York Project.

The park features one of the neighborhood’s only covered bus shelters, a mural by renowned Detroit artist Nicole Macdonald, steel signage by neighborhood artist Ryan Doyle, a rubber mulch walking pathway, and five varieties of flowers and greenery.

The park design was imagined by NW Goldberg resident David Richards who has helped in the design of all three of the non-profit’s parks.

“The community and leaders from NW Goldberg represent the best of, and talent within, the City of Detroit. Their efforts to be self-determinate with respect to creating a brighter future in their neighborhood serves as a model for urban communities around the world,” said Councilwoman Sheffield. “I am proud to have a played a small role, alongside local businesses, in beautifying this important and historic community.”

The organization is currently competing in the 2020 Rock Family of Companies Community Challenge.

NW Goldberg Cares, along with 70 other local nonprofits, has the opportunity to win additional prizes totaling over $25,000 in the fundraising challenge. Funds raised will go towards the organization's 20 BY ‘25 INITIATIVE, aiming to bring 20 green spaces to the NW Goldberg by December 31, 2025, as well as the REIMAGINING FERRY PARK INITIATIVE, aiming to reactive Ferry Park, a former commercial corridor.

Donations can be made through the organization’s Rock Family of Companies Community Challenge Mightycause fundraising page.
