Detroit, MI — Philanthropy and competition will kick-off on Sunday, June 6 when people unite to play in the inaugural NW GOLDBERG KICKBALL CLASSIC.

The fundraising school-yard game is the idea of Cranbrook Kingswood seniors Olivia DeMuth and Lilli Sherman, who are completing their Senior May projects with NW Goldberg Cares, a community development organization serving residents in a westside Detroit  neighborhood.

“After having so much fun playing with the kids at PLAY NW GOLDBERG, we wanted to find a way to have as much fun with our friends and others to support the future home of the program,” said DeMuth.

The game will benefit THE CURTIS JONES PARK, a project of NW Goldberg Cares.

The active lifestyle park fills a critical void within the neighborhood, lacking a public basketball court for nearly a decade.

The public space will also host interactive programming, such as youth sports camps, senior citizen fitness classes, health fairs, interactive sports, and educational programming.

The active lifestyle park, to be located on Ferry Park, is named after Northwestern High School basketball legend Curtis Jones. Jones hit the game winning shot in an upset of Detroit Pershing in the first televised Detroit Public School league title game in 1967.

“Who doesn’t love a good game of kickball? We are excited to witness Lilli and Olivia blend their passion for sports and community in a fun fundraising event for our neighborhood,” said NW Goldberg Cares Founder and Executive Director Daniel A. Washington. “As student athletes, the Curtis Jones story resonated with them and they want to be a part of honoring his legacy and reduce the chances of his struggle happening to another student.”

All donations for the game will go directly to the project’s Patronicity campaign, and should the $50,000 goal be met, the project will receive a full match from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation through the Public Spaces Community Places program.
