DSO TO HOST SERIES OF EVENTS AT SPOTLIGHT PARK THIS SUMMER

New partnership brings the DSO to a Detroit neighborhood and its youth like never before

Detroit, MI — This summer, neighborhood children will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the music of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

MUSIC IN THE PARK, a free program for children ages 10 and under will run every Friday in July from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to hear DSO musicians and work with local teaching artists to learn about melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, expression and sound. The final celebration will take place on Saturday, July 30, from 1:30-4:30 p.m.

MUSIC IN THE PARK is supported by a grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. The program is a collaboration between the DSO and NW Goldberg Cares.

“Our neighborhood has such a rich musical history, being home to Motown and the original Olympia,” said NW Goldberg Cares’ Director of Programming Jordan Yagiela. “We are thrilled to be launching a program with the DSO that will allow for children to experience a variety of musical elements that often aren’t accessible in neighborhoods like ours.”

Each session will feature a specific theme, activities for children to explore that theme, lunch, and a performance by DSO musicians and/or local artists.

“The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is honored to partner with NW Goldberg Cares to participate in the growth and the joy of this historic neighborhood,” said Karisa Antonio, Director of Social Innovation, Detroit Symphony Orchestra. MUSIC IN THE PARK is co-designed to celebrate the deep musical culture of Detroit and to be an inspiration to aspiring artists of all ages.”

This program is free, but registration is required.
